Spoke with her nurse a few minutes ago.  She said Ada was getting a bath and that they have drawn blood for the sepsis test but no results at this point.  She is scheduled for the cardiac sonogram later.  That’s all I have at this point.

sepsis

Let us all pray that she does not have this infection called sepsis.

Sepsis is a medical condition that originates with some type of infection that gets out of control in the body. Usually, this is a bacterial infection, but can be viral or fungal. The condition, also called SIRS (system inflammatory response syndrome) is dangerous, and needs immediate hospitalization so it can be dealt with. Sepsis comes in different forms. In severe sepsis, organ dysfunction or failure results. With septic shock, the blood pressure drops quickly as vital organs are deprived of oxygen rich blood when the cardiovascular system fails. Septicemia occurs when the infection gets into the bloodstream itself.

It’s hard to say with sinus tachycardia.  It could be that they first thought of that when she had such a high pulse rate in response to exercise this morning (she told me she did…I think they tried exercise a few times then stoppped).  Web sites show many possible causes of tachycardia, including fluid around the heart, sepsis, anxiety, dehydration, anemia, etc.  Could be genetic or anxiety-related, or both.  I expect all those tests tomorrow will be aimed at trying to find the cause of the sinus tachycardia and therefore the right therapy to address they problem.  For many years I can remember Ada complaining about a rapid/irregular heart beat, although why she has it now could be completely unrelated to those incidences (or perhaps it’s something she’s already prone to that is exaggerated by some current issue).  I hope she can get some rest tonight.

1-28-10 pm

Spoke with her a few minutes ago. She ate a hamburger and a strawberry soda for dinner but it only brought her blood sugar up to 71 (pretty low). They’re going to re-assess her tomorrow (not sure exactly what that means). They have a heart sonogram scheduled for tomorrow because they think she may have fluid around her heart, as well as sinus tachycardia (rapid heart beat). She sounded tired but at least not panicked. A resident and a nurse were coming in to check on her toward the end of our conversation, so we said good night and planned to talk tomorrow.

Marlene called a few minutes ago and said Ada wanted me to call her so I did.  She sounded ok.  They haven’t moved her yet, but Dawnelle’s now there to help move her stuff when they do.  She mainly just wanted to talk.  She said that earlier today a P.A. said she had sepsis.  However, a little while ago Dr. Campbell (renal specialist) came by and said she did not have sepsis.  I hope he’s right, but I guess if there’s a question about it they’ll sort it out shortly.   She’s going back  to the “liver floor”.

1-28-10 crash

Just heard they’re moving her from rehab back to the main hospital.  She crashed several times this morning because of low blood sugar that they were having trouble stabilizing, and she has sepsis (i.e., infection…I don’t know of what, how extensive, etc.). I spoke with Ada a minute ago and her blood sugar’s up to 132 now and she was trying to eat lunch.

Two days ago they found some fluid in Ada’s right lung and the tent setup with the breathing medicine was like K. said, to prevent Pneumonia.  They will have do this treatment once a month for awhile.  Today I saw her a couple of times and she looks good.  Her Creatinine was down to 1.6, just one point above normal and her Potassium Level was now in the normal range. The deal they put in her upper chest with the ”in flow” and ”out-flow” for her blood during dialysis has been bleeding ever since she got to this new Re-Hab room.  The nurses are working on it.

Peace and Love and good sleep to everyone!

From what I’ve been researching, pentamidine is often used to PREVENT pneumonia and other respiratory infections in people who are very susceptible to infections, such as those who’ve had a recent organ transplant. It wouls be my assumption that they gave her this treatment due to the fact that it is flu season, and we have a new strain to worry about, and she is moving to a place were it will be less sterile.

She didn’t need dialysis today.  All night and part of today she’s had bleeding around the dialysis pic line.  It finally stopped, but it limited her physical therapy today to exercises in bed.  The bleeding kept her up a lot last night and she sounded tired, but not too bad.  If I call back tonight I’ll send you an update.  They’re still saying her liver is doing fine.
